Capital Markets: Sencha raises $14M; RTFC funds rural expansion; and more

Sequoia Capital led a $14 million series A funding round into Sencha, which makes Internet applications for mobile devices. Radar Partners also participated in the funding round. The company said it will use the funds for development and distribution of its next-generation HTML5-based products.
Foursquare, the Web site that allows people to virtually check in to locations using their smartphone, raised $20 million in venture capital financing. Andreessen Horowitz led the funding round.
Rural Telephone Finance Cooperative and Nex-Tech Wireless signed a loan agreement for $17 million that RTFC will provide for future expansion by Nex-Tech. The company will use the funding to expand its current coverage in Kansas.
Mavenir Systems, which provides mobile convergence solutions, said it raised $13.6 million in its fourth round of funding. Investors include North Bridge Venture Partners, Austin Ventures, Alloy Ventures, Greenspring Associates and Cisco. The company said it has raised a total of $65 million since 2005.
Research In Motion (RIM) announced first quarter results, including a 24% increase in revenues to $4.24 billion from $4.08 billion during the same period last year. Net income for the quarter was $768.9 million, or$1.38 per share, compared with $710.1 million, or $1.27 cents per share, during the first quarter of 2009. RIM said it expects second-quarter revenues to range from $4.4 billion to $4.6 billion. In addition, the company’s board of directors approved a share repurchase plan that calls for the purchase and cancellation of up to 31 million common shares.
RGB Networks, which specializes in network video processing, said it acquired RipCode Inc., a developer of mobile IP video. RGB will incorporate RipCode’s technology into its Video Multiprocessing Gateway.
Sparkplug Communications, which provides wireless business broadband voice and data services, said it completed its acquisition of MetroBridge Networks’ Phoenix-area business assets, including customer contracts, network infrastructure and related assets. The deal was announced in May.
Nortel (NRTLQ) said it completed the sale of its 50% plus 1 share interest in LG-Nortel Co. Ltd. to L.M. Ericsson (ERIC). The purchase price was $242 million.
AT&T’s (T) board of directors declared a quarterly dividend of 42 cents per share on its common stock. The dividend is payable Aug. 2 to shareholders of record on July 9.
