Some devices are so popular, so high flying, you need to literally look to the skies just to get your hands on one, as is the case with Motorola’s much hyped Droid X, which sold out at Verizon on the first day it was offered.
RCR Unplugged was surprised, therefore, when we received the following offer from Continental airlines this week, offering us a Droid X. “Earn Miles and get a new DROID X by Motorola,” read the subject line.
Disappointingly, this proved to be somewhat false advertising, as Continental is not doling out Droid Xs with in-flight dinners, but rather directs punters to its Onepass partnership site where members can buy the popular phone for $180 (ok, ok, $179.99) with a two year Verizon contract. That’s about $20 less than one would pay at either Verizon or Best Buy.
“The new DROID X by Motorola is available today for shipping, but quantities are limited, and will be shipped on a first-come first-served basis,” reads the website. “Please note that new account applications must be approved by Verizon Wireless, and upgrade orders must pass an eligibility check before orders are entered into the queue,” it continues.
Standard Shipping via FedEx is apparently free and OnePass customers purportedly get 5000 miles just for activating the phone. Generously throwing caution to the wind, Continental is also offering 10 OnePass miles for every $1 spent on accessories for the device.
As is always the case with carriers, airline and other, there is unfortunately small print. It reads “please allow 8-10 weeks after purchase for miles to post to your account. To be eligible, you must not have deactivated or downgraded the wireless plan you originally signed up for. You must be a Continental OnePass member in good standing at the time miles are posted to your account.”
Also, frequent flyer families may be upset to learn that “shared plans and family plans constitute one rate plan regardless of the number of phones ordered.”
Oh yeah, and please remember to switch it off at takeoff and landing.
