It’s been nearly a decade since Sony Corp. (SNE) and LM Ericsson (ERIC) formed a joint venture to combine their strengths in the mobile device market, but Sony has so far left its gaming background off the table.
Apparently that’s about to change.
Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications L.P. is working on a project that would take advantage of Sony’s PSP experience and build it into a new gaming platform, ecosystem and device using Google Inc.’s (GOOG) Android operating system, Engadget reports.
The report describes the forthcoming device, which will be a slider with gaming controls placed where a QWERTY keyboard usually sits, as a “cross between the Samsung Captivate and the PSP Go.” The display on the device is expected to be somewhere between 3.7 and 4.1 inches with a likely 1 GHz Snapdragon processor from Qualcomm Inc. and a minimum of 5 megapixels on board the camera. Engadget also expects the new device to carry the PlayStation brand on mobile for the first time. Until now, Sony has only used its Walkman brand on Sony Ericsson phones.
The device will open up a new area in the Android Market for games and it’s expected to be released as early as October.
Is Sony finally ready to push PlayStation on mobile?
