Google: apps on TV are compelling

.

Google TV creates some really interesting possibilities” said the firm’s Ambarish Kenghe at a recent panel as he explained the concept to the unwashed masses.

Kenghe, Google’s lead product manager for the television offering spoke at the “Internet TV: Development and Monetization Strategies” panel at AppNation 2010 in San Francisco, where he attempted to persuade people that running apps on one’s TV would actually be appealing.

Google TV, he explained, runs not only Android, but also a full chrome browser with Flash 10.1 support, turning regular old TV into some kind of super hybrid web TV. Basically, the same idea that Yahoo and others have relentlessly tried to popularize in the past with little success.

“You get all of the TV and all of the web in a single place,” gushed Kenghe, marveling at the fact Google TV allowed viewers to seamlessly switch back and forth between the two.

While the current version doesn’t yet support the full Android market, it does have a chrome browser, which Google reckons should be enough until it eventually decides to open up the Android Market for couch potatoes of the future.

When it finally does beam its way onto our TV screens, Google’s Android market will be the selfsame one found on today’s phones, and all apps will be available unless they have specific hardware requirements like GPS, says Kenghe.

TV apps, he adds, are compelling because of the bigger screen, better speakers and “very interesting context” of the living room.
