Bits and Bytes: Wi-Fi Certified n program marks one year; Ntelos launches self-service management; and more

One year after the Wi-Fi Certified n testing program was launched, more than 1,100 products have achieved Wi-Fi Certified n status, including 127 phones, according to the Wi-Fi Alliance.“The number and variety of devices that have become Wi-Fi CERTIFIED n in past 12 months have been tremendously exciting,” said Kelly Davis-Felner, marketing director at the Wi-Fi Alliance. “From televisions to mobile phones and points in between, Wi-Fi now connects a majority of consumer electronics, delivering the entertainment experiences that consumers crave.”

Ntelos Wireless introduced new on-device self-service account management capability provided by Telespree Communications. The agreement between the companies allows Ntelos subscribers to access their account information on their handsets without having to call customer care or accessing an automated voice response system.

UrbanWorld Wireless partnered with Interscope Records to launch “Club Droid,” which is an application available on the Android platform that connects users into the party scene in Los Angeles, Las Vegas, San Francisco, Chicago, Atlanta, Miami and New York City. Interscope Records will use the application to promote several upcoming events including album release parties, music showcases, and artist meet and greets.

Synchronica said it completed an order from a major mobile device manufacturer to certify and license its IMPS instant messaging client to be pre-installed on six models of the manufacturer’s handsets. The order, which is valued initially at $48,000, satisfies a requirement of a major Latin American operator group that mandates that manufacturers certify their devices with Synchronica’s IM infrastructure, said the company.

Qualcomm Inc. has joined the African Telecommunications Union as an associate member. ATU was established 33 years ago to encourage development in information and communications technologies infrastructure and services.

American Roamer said Time Warner Cable Mobile Services has launched its CellMaps application, which allows the company to provide interactive Internet-based North American coverage maps for its mobile customers. The service allows customers to check service availability using features like zoom, local or regional views, full click and drag navigation, and the ability to search for 3G and 4G service.

Counterpath said it was awarded a patent that covers the assigning of single identity to multiple devices and how to route the communication services to devices that share a single identity. The technology is aimed at allowing customers to chose which device they want to use based on their situation and location, but still retain the same phone ID.

Openet, which provides BSS/OSS software to Tier 1 operators, created Subscriber Optimization Software, which the company said represents a new category within the OSS/BSS market. The group includes mediation, subscriber data management, policy management, and real-time charging.

Anritsu introduced its MS202xC/MS203xC VNA Master series of handheld vector network analyzers. The series of products offers a frequency range of 5 kHz up to 20 GHz in a handheld vector network analyzer. The company said the products also feature fast sweep times, waveguide support and advanced time domain capabilities. Anritsu said the new products can be used for system maintenance and interference detection in a variety of network applications.

Gemalto said its advanced manufacturing and service center in Montgomeryville, Pa., received the security assurance certification from the North American Security Products Organzation.
