T-Mobile USA Inc. plans to more aggressively target the Voice over Internet Protocol space with the upcoming launch of its Wi-Fi Calling solutions planned for a number of devices running Google Inc.’s Android operating system. The offering allows customers to make seamless voice calls using a Wi-Fi network in areas where a cellular signal may be insufficient to handle the call or allow customers to reduce their usage of a bucket plans calling minutes.
The carrier originally launched the Wi-Fi Calling service in mid-2007 and said that it currently “host approximately 40 million Wi-Fi calls per month.” The service currently has a more business-oriented slant as it’s compatible with enterprise-focused devices like Nokia Corp.’s E73 Mode, and Research In Motion Ltd.’s BlackBerry Curve 8520, Bold 9700 and Curve 3G.
The Android offering is powered by Kineto Wireless’ Smart Wi-Fi Application and according to T-Mobile USA will be ready to use out of the box with support for both voice calls and text messaging.
Android-powered devices compatible with the service will include HTC Corp.’s myTouch and Motorola Inc.’s Defy and MotoBlur. Support for additional devices is set for the coming months.
