Bits and Bytes: PlayPhone launches social gaming platform; Sequans intros WiMAX SIP; and more

Mobile entertainment company PlayPhone Inc. launched its PlayPhone Social mobile social gaming platform. The company said the platform represents a strategic shift from the company’s mobile entertainment content offerings. The platform is a multiplayer, cross-platform product for mobile social gaming and networking.
Sequans introduced a WiMAX system-in-package product for handsets, tablets, USB sticks, portable hot spots, M2M modules and other consumer electronics devices. The SQN1280 combines the company’s SQN1210 Mobile WiMAX system-on-chip with all other necessary components. The product includes a complete radio front end, power management, memory, clocks and software.
Tata Elsxi said its optimized LTE Femto/Pico eNodeB solution is now available. The product is compliant with 3GPP Release 8 and Femto Forum specifications and supports standard channel bandwidths and MIMO configurations.
picoChip announced its support for the Femto Forum LTE application programming interfaces. The APIs have been defined during the past two years to help LTE femtocell developers integrate subsystems from different suppliers in an effort to reduce integration cost and time.
Aptilo Networks said it has added LTE technology to its portfolio of service management and policy control solutions for operators. The company’s new 4G service management platform with LTE support includes a purpose-built policy charging and rules function that is pre-integrated with optional modules, said the company.
Texas Instruments introduced two ultra-low-power short-range wireless connectivity solutions for applications including mobile accessories, consumer medical and sports and wellness. The CC2540 single-mode Bluetooth low-energy system-on-chip and the CC257x ANT network processor allow applications to operate on a coin cell for more than a year, said the company. TI also introduced an integrated IQ modulator for the wireless infrastructure market. The TRF372017 integrates a direct up-conversion IQ modulator with a phase-locked loop and wideband voltage crystal oscillator to simplify local oscillator design and reduce board space.
Diversinet said it has been listed in Deloitte’s Technology Fast 500 for North America. The company is ranked No. 164 on the list, which recognizes the fastest growing technology, media, telecommunications, life sciences and clean technology companies in North America.
The Smart Card Alliance announced its first international Certified Smart Card Industry Professional preparation course and exam will be held this year at the CARTES & Identification event in Paris. The certification training course and exam will take place Dec. 6 and Dec. 9 at the Paris Nord Villepinte exhibition center.
In its most recent mobile marketing analytics report, Mogreet found the Apple iPhone was the most popular device for customers to view mobile video messaging at 7.2%. Verizon Wireless garnered the largest percentage of mobile video messaging views at 37.4%, followed by AT&T at 31.4% and T-Mobile at 12.4%. “Our research shows that iPhone is the most popular device for viewing mobile video messages among all demographic groups, however it is important to note that basic feature phones are still the most dominant devices among consumers,” said James Citron, CEO of Mogreet. “The key take-away for brand marketers is that their mobile campaigns must be designed for consumers who use a feature phone. One of the biggest advantages of MMS is the ability to reach nearly 80 percent of mobile phone subscribers, because a smartphone is not required to view multimedia content. ZTE Corp. launched the ZXMBW R9110 WiMAX/TD-LTE dual-mode Remote Radio Unit at 4G World in Chicago. The product supports the 2.3G/2.5GHz and 3.5 GHz spectrum bands and includes antenna technologies including MIMO and beamforming.
CarrierIQ said its solutions have been named to VisionMobile’s 100 Million Club, which recognizes software businesses that have established a significant presence in the mobile handset market, specifically those that have been embedded on 100 million mobile phones or more.

Syncrhonica said it received a patent for its method of streaming documents, e-mail attachments and maps to wireless devices. The company acquired the patent via its purchase of iseemedia.
Glu Mobile announced the availability of Toyshop Adventures in its app store. The game puts players in control of the Toyshop toys while they explore the miniature toyshop world.
Nex-Tech Wireless marked its fifth anniversary. The company, which launched service on Oct. 15, 2005, serves 50,000 voice and data users in central and western Kansas.
