Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. has inked a deal to expand operations at its research and development center in Ottawa.
The company made the announcement during a visit by Ontario’s Premier Dalton McGuinty in Shanghai. Huawei will invest $66.8 million into the North American R&D expansion and Ontario is supporting the project with a $6.4 million grant.
McGuinty’s trade mission was part of the government’s five-year Open Ontario Plan. The province’s business-friendly tax structure is likely to benefit Huawei as well. The new center is expected to create 164 jobs over five years.
“Huawei’s investment is great news for the city of Ottawa and the people of Ontario. It’s an endorsement of Ontario’s high-skilled workers and innovative researchers, and demonstrates the importance of our continued efforts to work together to create jobs and build prosperity,” McGuinty said.
“Ottawa has long been a nurturing ground for some of the world’s brightest minds in telecommunications. This latest investment, supported by the Ontario government, will help Huawei strengthen its North American R&D capabilities and drive technology innovation and the growth of Canada’s telecommunications industry, contributing to Canada’s digital economy,” said Charles Ding, president of Huawei North America.
