Tellabs Inc. (TLAB) acquired substantially all of the assets of Zeugma Systems Inc., a Vancouver, B.C., Canada-based company that offers a service delivery router. Tellabs said it acquired the staff, intellectual property and Internet Protocol expertise of the company, which was founded by Andrew Harries, one of the founders of Sierra Wireless. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Tellabs said the Vancouver business will now become a research and development facility for Tellabs, as the network provider addresses the challenges operators face with more data flowing across their networks due to the strong uptake of smart phones. About 30 employees will now work for Tellabs and the company is looking to hire more, a spokeswoman said, as it beefs up its R&D efforts for mobile Internet.
Privately held Zeugma Systems said its Zeugma Services Node is a service delivery router that “combines massive compute resources with next-generation capacity, service awareness, and subscriber management in a carrier-grade, fully redundant system,” according to the company’s website. It appears the firm has raised about $38 million in venture capital funding, but has not put out a new press release in all of 2010.
Former Zeugma personnel will join Tellabs’ Vancouver facility to focus on developing Tellabs Mobile Solutions, which the company said adds intelligence to the network so operators can cut costs and deliver better experiences.
“To help our mobile customers succeed, we’re adding more IP expertise to enable the smart mobile Internet,” said Rob Pullen, president and CEO. “Vancouver offers a unique talent pool that can accelerate our delivery of differentiated solutions to customers. We welcome our new employees to Tellabs.”
“We’re delighted to complete our agreement and welcome Tellabs to Vancouver,” said Andrew Harries, President & CEO, Zeugma Systems Inc. “Our agreement enables Tellabs to utilize significant intellectual property and add to its team of developers focused on mobile Internet solutions.”
Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
