China Telecom, Huawei and Corning Jointly Announced the Completion of 3000km Ultra Long Haul 100G WDM Transmission Test in China

[Beijing, China, 8 December, 2010] China Telecom, Huawei, and Corning Incorporated, jointly announced that the completion of China’s first 100G wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) ultra long haul transmission test. The test also set a new record of 100G WDM transmission distance of over 3000 km in terrestrial fiber system.
Along with the steady development of FTTx broadband infrastructure and triple-play service, the broadband network development of China Telecom is moving on a fast track. To support this development, China Telecom is looking for state-of-the-art 100G WDM ultra-high-speed transmission technology as the successor of its backbone network based on 40G WDM transmission technology. In this test, the 100G WDM transmission equipment was based on coherent PM-QPSK (polarization multiplexed quadrature phase-shift keying) technology, which is recognized as the optimal technology for 100G WDM long-haul transmission. Moreover, C-band 50 GHz-spacing and hybrid transmission of 100G/40G are also adopted in the test. The 100G WDM performance and key technological indicators are tested with proven results on a network model with and without DCM module.
Huawei’s OSN 8800 platform, a highlight in the test, has the ability to smoothly scale to 100G and support hybrid transmission of 100G, 40G and 10G signals. This 100G transmission solution, when coupled with OTN solutions, builds a huge on-demand bandwidth pool for an array of services, thereby rolling out services efficiently.
Another highlight in this test is the Corning® SMF-28® ULL ultra-low-loss optical fiber, an ITU-T G.652-compliant optical fiber that has ultra-low attenuation (average attenuation at 1550 nm: 0.168 dB/km) and polarization mode dispersion (PMD), empowering new-generation transmission system to achieve ultra-long span reach and ultra-high speed.
Zhang Chengliang, deputy general engineer of China Telecom Beijing Research Institute, said, “This 100G WDM test, in collaboration with Huawei and Corning Incorporated, has demonstrated the positive outlook for 100G WDM applications. This test will help China Telecom step up efforts to provide more enriched broadband network services to users in the future.”
“Huawei is committed to technical innovations and commercial deployments of state-of-the-art technologies to support future services of operators. This 100G WDM test demonstrates Huawei’s continuous efforts to support operators obtain increased bandwidths, while minimizing their total cost of ownership (TCO), energy consumption and telecommunications room space,” added Cai Changtian, president of Transport, Huawei.
“We are glad to team up with China Telecom and Huawei to demonstrate the 100G WDM solution that can be ready for commercial use,” Martin J. Curran, senior vice president and general manager of Corning Optical Fiber, commented. “We will continue our efforts to the long-haul optical fiber products to make them capable enough for customer demands of today and tomorrow. The low-loss optical fibers provided by Corning help operators extend the reach of optical networks without compromising the data rate, and empower the network scalability for fast-expanding bandwidth demands.”
