Chinese communications equipment maker Huawei has launched a line of consumer devices, an attempt to expand from behind-the-scenes manufacturer to a consumer brand.
In a move reminiscent of the transition of Taiwan-based smartphone maker HTC in 2007, Huawei said Monday it would continue to work “closely” with partner companies producing third-party devices, but was also launching a self-branded line to the Australian market.
The products would include pocket wireless internet devices and a range of smartphones, running on Google’s Android operating system.
Huawei’s local head of marketing Mark Treadwell said over half of all Australians were already using products manufactured by Huawei and sold under different brand names including mobile phones, tablets, and wireless dongles.
