2degrees has started stocking a mobile phone made by South Korean firm LG that has slots for two Sim cards, providing connections to two networks and two mobile phone numbers.
The main advantage of the phone is that customers can easily switch between two networks when making outgoing calls, to take advantage of different pricing plans. Customers can also disable either Sim without removing it, so they could divert one of their numbers to voicemail during meetings, for example, while still receiving calls on the other.
When travelling overseas, customers could install a Sim from a local carrier so they could make in-country calls at local rates, while still receiving calls on their permanent, main number.
LG said dual-Sims could benefit businesses that wanted to make it easier for employees to pay for their own personal calls. The model C310 phone is priced at $199.
Samsung and Nokia also both make dual-Sim phones for markets overseas, mainly in Asia. One disadvantage of dual-Sim phones is that they consume about 30 per cent more power, meaning they will have either larger, heavier batteries or a shorter battery life.
