Chile certifies devices for Digital TV

NextTVLATAM News Release | Friday, December 17 2010
The Chilean Government presented a single seal that will certify which receivers are suitable for Digital TV under ISDB-T. The objective is aimed at “making the Chilean TV set market transparent and providing the population with proper information”, stated the Minister of Transport and Telecommunications, Felipe Morandé. According to the executive, by mid 2010, 200,000 TV sets suitable for free DTT reception had been sold.
The Government also informed that all models and brands of certified TV sets will be included in a public list in the site www.tvd.cl. During the presentation of this initiative, Morandé stated: “TV set market renews every four years and digital TV arrival will accelerate the process”. Therefore, he confirmed that “it is vital to make the market transparent and provide consumers with suitable information. If they will buy a new digital TV set, we want them to feel quiet and confident”.
On the other hand, the Sub Secretary of Telecommunications, Jorge Atton, suggested that with this step taken by the Government “any person in Chile will be able to easily know which TV set he or she is buying and whether its is suitable to see free-to-air digital TV, once coverage in each area is ready. Something expected to happen as soon as possible. To such ends, we placed digital TV Act as a front burner issue, currently analyzed in the Congress, because we want new channels to reach all regions”. At present, the state-owned channel TVN and private channels Canal 13 TV and Chilevisión, among others, are carrying out experimental DTT broadcastings in the capital city of Santiago. Given the fact that the Digital TV Act has not been passed yet, the Government has recently renewed licenses already granted to channels to broadcast experimentally under such technology.
