▶ KT successfully launched its satellite “Olleh 1” from the Guyana Space Center in French Guyana, South America at 06:27 on Dec. 30, 2010
▶ High quality satellite services including HD and 3D are to be provided from early February in 2011.
KT(Chairman, Lee Suk-chae, www.kt.com) announced that KT successfully launched its communications and broadcast satellite “Olleh 1” from the Guiana Space Center in French Guiana, South America at 06:27 (local time: 18:27) on Dec. 30, 2010.
With the of launch of Olleh 1, KT can provide high quality HD and 3D satellite broadcast services, with a 25% increase in satellite broadcasting output across the Korean Peninsula, for 15 years from early February 2011.
After liftoff the Olleh 1 satellite stably entered transfer orbit, 6,500km up in the air, at 07:21, 54 minutes after its launch, through three separations. The satellite will safely reach stationary orbit, 36,000km up in the sky, via four engine ignitions for about 10 days.
KT is preparing for a joint satellite launch with foreign satellite businesses in 2013 to expand service areas to the Middle East and Africa, in addition to Asia.
Kim Seong-man , vice president of KT’s Network Sector, remarked, “With the successful launch of the Olleh 1 satellite we have laid the foundation for opening the satellite age covering the entire Korean Peninsula.” He added, “We will continuously improve satellite technology service quality in order to take off as a top tier global satellite service provider by having four artificial satellites.”
