The China Post news staff — Chunghwa Telecom, Taiwan’s leading operator, is planning to phase out long-distance calls and create a system in which calls made to anywhere in Taiwan are charged at the local rate, reported the local Economic Daily News yesterday, citing Chang Hsiao-tung, president of Chunghwa.
When implemented, the new system will help users save about NT$87 an hour, yet is expected to slash Chunghwa’s fixed-line revenue by NT$3.6 billion a year, the paper reported.
Users may end up paying the piper, if Chunghwa decided to raise its local call rate, the paper reported.
The Transportation Committee of the Legislative Yuan passed a resolution on Wednesday, Jan. 5 requiring Chunghwa Telecom to come up with a plan to scrap long-distance calls and create a single-rate system.
