Tellabs wins Canadian carrier contract

Barrett Xplore Inc. said it will deploy Tellabs’ (TLAB) SmartCore 9160 platform as it rolls out a combination terrestrial/satellite broadband system using WiMAX technology across Canada. The rural broadband provider said it expects to be able to offer service to every Canadian by the end of 2012.
Headquartered in Woodstock, New Brunswick, Barrett operates Xplornet Internet Services, which offers broadband services across Canada, with customers and dealers in every province and territory. Barrett Xplore said it wants to bridge the digital divide by ensuring that every Canadian, regardless of where they live, has access to broadband services. The company said that although it was initially using WiMAX technology, its network could be upgradeable to LTE.
Tellabs will provide its SmartCore platform to help Barrett Xplore manage IP traffic and capacity. “Tellabs’ technology will act as the controlling intelligence in the network, linking Xplornet customers to the Internet by authenticating each individual user and assigning network resources according to the customer’s selected package,” said Tellabs in a company statement. “The Tellabs platform provides advanced analytics and monetization tools to enable Barrett to maximize its investment, and a flexible, open network architecture to support future growth. Tellabs is also providing network design and integration services to help Barrett prepare for the network launch.”
