3G coverage overtakes fixed broadband in Brazil

BRASILIA, Jan. 13 (Xinhua) — The number of 3G users in Brazil reached 20.6 million in 2010, approximately 50 percent higher than that of fixed broadband Internet users, according to a new survey.

The 3G network, including smartphone and modems, which was first introduced in Brazil about three years ago, added 11.9 million new users in 2010, the Brazilian Association of Telecommunications(Telebrasil) said Thursday on its latest survey.

“In the smartphone segment, the growth reached 257 percent in 2010, increasing from four million in December 2009 to 14.6 million by the end of last month,” it said.

According to the survey, fixed broadband Internet users totaled 13.6 million in 2010, up 20 percent year on year.
