As Latin America’s LTE market takes shape this year, media companies will join mobile service providers in the rush to meet client demand, the VP for research and consulting at IDC, Ricardo Villate, told an online webcast.
While traditional mobile service providers will be partly bogged down by their installed client bases, new entrants such as Mexican broadcast giant Televisa, Brazilian telecom operator GVT, Argentine cable TV operator Cablevision and Chilean cable operator VTR will move in to take a piece of the LTE pie, according to Villate.
“In 2011, we expect to see providers battling for clients’ attention and also redistribution in the competitive environment,” he said. “We expect to see new entrants into the market.”
Although Latin America will see a giant leap in terms of LTE trials and spectrum auctions this year, “we don’t expect full-fledged LTE commercial sales until 2012 or 2013,” the analyst said.
