It’s not often that news itself makes the news, but Apple Inc. and News Corp.’s Daily newspaper designed especially for iPads, has proved the exception, leaving the blogosphere and business journals buzzing these last few weeks. The wait, however, may finally be over on Feb. 2, with invites going out today for the Daily’s big launch in New York.
The invitation notes that News Corp. Chairman and CEO Rupert Murdoch will take the stage at The Guggenheim Museum with Apple VP of Internet Services Eddy Cue to unveil the newspaper in Steve Jobs’ absence. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, as Cue is known to be responsible for some of Apple’s most successful product launches in recent years.
Little is known about the Daily, other than thatt it was expressly designed for the iPad, will update once per day, boast an editorial team of over 100 based in New York and have a rather populist slant.
Rumors have also emerged citing that the Daily’s design will be somewhat image-heavy, with an embedded video player for broadcast news and will include a bevy of social sharing features such as Twitter, Facebook, Digg, Reddit and Newsvine.
It is also believed that the Daily will feature “subscription only” content, which Murdoch himself has been a huge proponent of in the past.
We’ll bring you more details as they emerge next week.
