Bits & Bytes: 4G Americas releases white paper; Huawei's LTE trial; and more

4G Americas announced that it has published its resource report on 3GPP standards work and the evolution to 4G and beyond. The white paper, 4G Mobile Broadband Evolution: 3GPP Release 10 and Beyond – HSPA+, SAE/LTE and LTE-Advanced, provides detailed information on the status of IMT-Advanced, on 3GPP Release 10, including HSPA+ enhancements and the introduction of LTE-Advanced, and the planning for Release 11 and beyond. The GSM family of technologies, which are interchangeably called the 3GPP family of technologies, are all based on the evolution of standards developed for GSM, EDGE, UMTS-HSPA, HSPA+, LTE and LTE-Advanced. The white paper was written collaboratively by members of 4G Americas and is available for free download on the 4G Americas website.

Mformation Technologies Inc., provider of advanced mobile device management (MDM) solutions, announced its new solution for mobile broadband devices. Mformation’s mobile broadband solution will bring manageability and control to a wide range of computing devices that connect over mobile operator networks in addition to traditional networks. The solution will allow enterprises and mobile operators to control and secure devices including smartphones, tablets and notebooks.

Huawei announced a successful trial of LTE (Long Term Evolution) with Optimus. The trial achieved downlink speeds of 150 Mbps per user, and uplink speed of 60 Mbps, demonstrating Huawei’s LTE stability and capability to provide unparalleled mobile broadband experience to end-users. Optimus selected Huawei’s SingleRAN solution to modernize its GSM network in Portugal, enabling a fast LTE rollout in the future.

FiberLight L.L.C., provider of fiber optic networking services, announced it has joined Allied Fiber’s Dark Fiber Community. FiberLight delivers broadband connectivity solutions over a diverse optical ring typology network encompassing more than 500,000 miles of fiber optic cable which it owns, operates and monitors, providing network security and business continuity solutions. Fiberlight’s LightSource family of products includes Ethernet, IP, Managed Wavelengths, Dark Fiber and SONET, which provide scalable bandwidth increments up to 40 Gig in metro markets.

Alvarion Ltd., provider of 4G networks in the broadband wireless access (BWA) market, announced that Pennsylvania’s PPL Electric Utilities is deploying Alvarion’s BreezeMAX Extreme 3650 WiMAX solution as part of its smart grid communications network. The communication network upgrade will be enabled by a grant from the U.S. Department of Energy. It will be the first phase of PPL’s smart grid project with initial coverage of more than 60,000 customers over 150 square miles in the company’s Harrisburg, PA, operating region.
