Bytemobile enhances video optimization platform

Bytemobile said it has updated its Unison Smart Capacity platform to help wireless operators increase existing network capacity by 50%, which is increasingly important as wireless operators try to keep up with potentially crippling traffic demands as more users watch videos on mobile devices.
Bytemobile and its partner, IBM Corp. (IBM), said that 15 of Bytemobile’s largest customers – serving more than 350 million subscribers in North America, Europe and Asia – are using Bytemobile’s Unison Smart Capacity Platform with IBM’s BladeCenter network servers. About 13 petabytes of data traffic are flowing through these networks each day, which is about the equivalent of 175 years of HD-TV video, Bytemobile said.
Bytemobile estimates video-based content will grow by 50% in 2011, accounting for more than 60% of network traffic, based on actual network traffic data it is seeing on networks today. People are beginning to consume high-definition video, streaming media and person video communications, like video chat functions, said Ronny Haraldsvik, VP of global marketing at Bytemobile. Personal video communications was not taken into account in Bytemobile’s forecast, he added. “We haven’t even seen how big the impact will be on capacity yet.”
As such, operators need to optimize their network to deliver video, but end users shouldn’t notice the optimization techniques, Haraldsvik said.
New features of the Unison 6.0 platform include streaming policy control for video and audio services; high-definition optimization and video caching with adaptive optimization. That allows operators to balance network performance across viral and long-tail video content, which means faster download times and better bandwidth use for operators.
Finally, Bytemobile said its applications have been certified to support the new IBM Cloud Service Provider Platform, which enables operators to deliver cloud computing services.
