Qualcomm Inc. and Creative Artists Agency are launching a joint venture to develop mobile apps.
Based in Los Angeles at CAA’s offices, Creative Mobile Labs will develop concepts with talent specifically for the mobile platform. The general idea is to have Qualcomm help on the technology front and CAA to supply the talent, ideas and storytelling.
“We want to push the envelope of the experiences consumers can have,” Isaac Babbs, VP and GM for Qualcomm Services Labs, told Variety.
“We’re not saying that because Hollywood and technology is coming together it’s going to change the world,” Babbs added. “We’re saying because we really know this space and how to get it done, we can take whatever ideas talent have and create some great applications.”
While there hasn’t been any formal announcement about leadership at the new venture, a Sony Music executive has told coworkers that he is leaving the company to run Creative Mobile Labs.
Describing his new venture in a farewell e-mail to colleagues that was picked up by Billboard, Matt Kozlov wrote:
“I’m thrilled to run a company with the support of these two teams. Qualcomm has been a leader in mobile technology for as long as there have been mobile phones. They’re extremely passionate about innovating new consumer mobile technology (such as augmented reality), and I’m looking forward to working alongside them to try and find fun, exciting applications for their platforms. Likewise, CAA is the premier talent agency, representing practically everyone you’ve ever heard of, and they’ve had great success leveraging this talent to drive the success of other digital startups they incubate (i.e., Funny or Die). At Creative Mobile Labs, we’re going to be combining these ingredients to create what we hope will be extremely fun, cool (and wildly successful) mobile franchises. I can’t wait.”
