How embarrassing for poor old Microsoft. First they were late to the whole smartphone party, and now Windows Phone 7’s first firmware update since the OS’s launch has obviously gone awry. Although not a major update – Microsoft said themselves it is a behind-the-scenes preparatory measure to get ready for the first major user-facing upgrade – something has gone wrong, as users of Samsung’s Omnia 7 have been taking to the internet in droves to complain of apparently bricked devices.
With the smartphone world’s attention focused on the just-announced Gingerbread update, and the increasingly ridiculous rumours surrounding Apple’s plans, this development has reduced Microsoft to little more than an amusing sideshow in the fast-moving mobile arena. We’re guessing there are some red faces in Redmond right about now.
Microsoft, in response to the user outcry, has ceased their rollout of the new software to Samsung handsets, a spokesperson telling WinRumors –
“In response to this emerging issue, we have temporarily taken down the latest software update for Samsung phones in order to correct the issue and as soon as possible will redistribute the update.”
Customers who have had their devices neutered are in the meantime advised to visit a store and swap them for a working device.
