Is the Motorola Xoom worth its weight in Gold? At $800 the answer should be yes, but just in case, Moto has produced a real golden version of its super expensive Android Honeycomb tablet, available only to Oscar nominees and one lucky Twitter winner.
The Xoom, which went on sale officially yesterday, will be part and parcel of the $85,000 goodie bag given out to Oscar nominees for Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, and Best Director. Lucky hosts James Franco and Anne Hathaway get one too.
For the rest of us plebs, the only chance for a bit of that star-powered gold dust is to log on to Twitter and retweet the following:
“It’s gold. It’s limited edition. It can be yours, simply RT for chance to#motoxoom – 2 will win! http://moto.ly/xrules.”
The luxury limited edition Xoom even comes with its own leather case, to protect it from our grubby fingers, we assume.
Of course, Anne Hathaway is no stranger to getting mobile gifts. Last year she managed to pick up the Palm Pre about four months before it officially went on sale, inside another Oscar goodie bag.
Meanwhile, while Moto is hedging its bets and not showing much preference when it comes to Oscar nominations, the same can’t be said for its choice of carrier partner.
The firm’s mobility group confessed it was far too reliant on operator Verizon Wireless, with almost 28% of Moto’s net revenues in 2010 coming from the carrier’s sales of its devices. Should anything happen to that relationship, that’s a serious chunk of change to lose.
Moto may even need to melt down some of its gold Xooms for liquid cash if that ever happens.
