China Mobile and NTT DoCoMo of Japan are expressing an interest in proposing business models to carry Advanced Info Service’s mobile business should it fail to pay 74billion baht in compensation stemming from changes to past contracts with state agencies.
Senior executives of the two telecommunications giants met Information and Communications Technology Minister Juti Krairiksh and three executives of TOT Plc in Spain this month to discuss a future role for the two Northeast Asian firms, an ICT source said.
SK Telecom of South Korea has also been kept abreast of developments by the Thai government.
The TOT was represented in the secret talks by board members Viboontut Sutontanakit and Sayan Satangmongkol and deputy president Noppanat Hutacharoen.
The source said Mr Juti raised concerns with executives of China Mobile and NTT DoCoMo about the possibility of AIS defaulting on the payment of the compensation of 74 billion baht.
