Pacnet joins new cloud computing initiative in China

The company will support Chongqing’s ambition to be China’s largest data center hub through the development of its Cloud Computing Special Zone

CHONGQING, CHINA, 2 March 2011 – Pacnet, Asia’s leading independent telecommunications service provider, and the Chongqing municipal government today announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to jointly develop an international Cloud Computing hub in Chongqing.

Huang Qifan, Mayor of Chongqing, Weng Jieming, Director-General of Liangjiang New Area Management Committee, Tong Xiaoping, Vice Mayor of Chongqing participated in a signing ceremony with Richard Carden, Senior Vice President of Sales, Pacnet and senior executives from the company.

According to the MOU, Pacnet and the Chongqing government will build leading-edge data centers to facilitate the development of an IT hub to support industry and economic development in the region.

Ten square kilometers of land in the Liangjiang New Area has been designated by the government as a Cloud Computing Special Zone, of which three square kilometers are reserved for the build out of state-of-the-art data centers and will be completed in three phases.

The total investment for the first phase of development is estimated at around RMB 1 billion (US$150 million), out of which RMB 200 million (US$30 million) will be used for the data center build out as well as cloud computing-related software and equipment.

Upon the signing of the Definitive Agreement, Pacnet Business Solutions will be the first foreign equity telecommunications joint venture to operate at the Chongqing Cloud Computing Special Zone and deliver a data center with at least 1,500 racks to provide cloud computing services. Pacnet will also be the strategic partner for the provisioning of international submarine cable capacity that will be connected through partners to the Chongqing Cloud Computing Special Zone.

“This strategic cooperation with Pacnet supports the goal of Chongqing to be at the forefront of the cloud computing industry in China. We will leverage Pacnet’s global capabilities to attract multinational companies to Chongqing to achieve our goal to become China’s major information technology hub, to further accelerate the economic growth in Chongqing,” said Mayor Huang.

“We thank the Chongqing municipal government for their strong support and are excited to work with them to grow the cloud computing capabilities of Chongqing. We look forward to sharing our telecommunications and data center expertise to support Chongqing’s vision of becoming a world-class cloud computing hub,” said Mr Carden.

Mu Huaping, Director-General of Chongqing Economic and Informative Committee said, “Pacnet and the Chongqing municipal government share the same view on the importance of developing the cloud computing industry in China. By leveraging Pacnet’s international expertise and global submarine infrastructure, we believe this will accelerate the growth of the cloud computing industry in Chongqing to become the leading international cloud computing hub in China.”
