Samsung set to poach Symbian developers

There’s no need for Symbian developers to go nok, nok nokia-ing on heaven’s door just yet, because Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. plans to lure them over to a Bada life.

A letter, which popped up online, purportedly from Samsung says: “If you are a Symbian developer unhappy about Nokia Corp.’s recent announcements, and are hence looking for a new platform to showcase your talents, we say ‘Hello!’ and ‘welcome to bada (operating system).”

Nokia is set to dump Symbian in favor of Microsoft Corp.’s sexier Windows Phone 7 operating system in the hope the alliance will trip up Google Inc.’s Android growth.

“If you’re new to the bada development, or are moving your app from Symbian, we’d like to welcome you,” the letter continued.

Bada is Samsung’s own low- to mid-range operating system mainly targeted at developing markets, and the Korean company admitted it had sent the letter to engineers in India, though it claimed it was not actively poaching staff from Nokia.

If that’s the case, it’s good news for the likes of Google and Skype, which have said they are keenly looking to snap up scores of scorned Symbian staff. There’s certainly no shortage, with Finnish unions claiming some 5,000 jobs may be at stake.

Perhaps Bada is set to get a bada-ss boost after all.
