BLiNQ Networks Introduces Intelligent Spectrum Optimization to Drive Mobile Backhaul Capacity Costs Down

BLiNQ Networks Inc. today announced intelligent spectrum optimization (ISO) for BLiNQ’s recently announced mobile backhaul solution. BLiNQ’s plug and play, non-line-of-sight (NLOS) backhaul solution uses low cost, sub-6 GHz TDD spectrum to significantly improve spectrum utilization to maximize capacity and reduce spectrum asset requirements. New ISO capabilities include Managed Adaptive Resource Allocation (MARA) technology that increases spectral reliability and Backhaul Self-Organizing Network (B-SON) for high capacity and spectral efficiency.
“The impediment to small cell adoption has been providing cost effective backhaul. With sub 6-GHz spectrum available in abundance and at low cost, non-line-of-sight backhaul of below roofline compact base stations becomes a viable option technically and financially,” said Mickey Miller, president and CEO at BLiNQ Networks. “BLiNQ’s solution provides greater than 50% savings in total cost of ownership over fiber which is about the only viable alternative for below roofline base stations.”
MARA delivers fast ROI by identifying inter-backhaul network interference between BLiNQ’s nodes and coordinates transmissions to eliminate interference. The result is high spectral efficiency across the backhaul network. B-SON provides coordination of multiple backhaul nodes, intelligent traffic control and QoS. The combination of these capabilities ensures over 80 Mbps of useful throughput in 10 MHz channel bandwidth.
As mobile data traffic volume grows exponentially in these markets, particularly in the urban areas where the capacity of macro-cellular networks cannot keep up with demand, using sub 6 GHz spectrum for mobile backhaul becomes an attractive business proposition that complements the services of fixed wireless access operators. BLiNQ’s NLOS Backhaul solution significantly improves the quality of the subscriber’s experience with faster data rates and lower latency. It enables operators to extend the life of 3G networks by deploying small cell base stations in areas where capacity or coverage is needed and deploy 4G/LTE in a spectrally efficient manner.

According to the Cisco Visual Networking Index Global Mobile Data Traffic Forecast for 2010 to 2015, worldwide mobile data traffic is expected to see a 26-fold increase between 2010 and 2015 as the use of smart phones, tablets and the consumption for mobile video drive data consumption. Because of the rapid increase in demand, cell sites in urban environments are reaching their capacity creating coverage dead zones and capacity hotspots. Operators cannot scale urban cell sites rapidly or cost-effectively. Current fiber solutions are too expensive to implement and microwave may not be feasible in all locations.
