Improved security elements of Microsoft’s (Nasdaq: MSFT) Internet Explorer 9 (IE9) web browser were a key contributing factor to the high level of downloads of the beta version in Latin America, Iñigo Asiain, Internet Explorer product manager for Microsoft Latin America, told BNamericas.
Microsoft launched globally on Monday (Mar 14) the finished version of IE9. Citing a report from Net Applications, Asiain said Internet Explorer was the highest-growing browser in the region.
According to the company, 40mn copies of the beta version were downloaded globally, making it the most downloaded browser of all time. It has already been adopted by 2% of Windows 7 users. The browser is only available for customers with Windows 7 or Vista software.
“Downloads of the beta version of IE9 in Latin America have been very good, above the global average; that is fantastic news,” Asiain said.
According to the executive, IE9’s improved graphics handling, security and privacy features are the main pillars of the new browser and should help it compete better with Firefox, Chrome and Safari.
