@ CTIA: Audi taps T-Mobile USA for connectivity in the car

Audi of America Inc. has tapped T-Mobile USA Inc. to provide wireless connectivity for the Audi Connect system in the car maker’s newest models. Beginning with the 2012 Audi A7 in April, the Audi Connect services will come to market a refreshed navigation system paired with Wi-Fi hotspot capability and a group of information services on demand.
News, weather, fuel prices at nearby gas stations and travel-related information will all be available on the new platform alongside a navigation system that overlays street maps from NAVTEQ Corp. with 3D imagery from Google Earth.
Audi’s forthcoming models with the right package will sport slots for a SIM card and two memory cards right on the dashboard. T-Mobile SIM cards will be included with the vehicle to enable Audi dealers to activate connectivity for the Audi MMI Navigation Plus system at the point of sale. T-Mobile is introducing a special rate plan for the service and a specialized customer service exclusively for Audi customers. Unlimited data plans will cost $25 or $29 per month deepening on whether the customer signs up for month-to-month billing or a long-term contract with the carrier. The first six months of service are included with the price of the vehicle.
“The launch of Audi Connect is part of a foundational strategy to help Audi lead with first-to-market, cutting-edge connected services,“ said Johan de Nysschen, president of Audi of America. “We’re looking forward to a productive relationship with T-Mobile USA as we give motorists and passengers the ability to access the most current information and enhance their enjoyment of their Audi vehicle.“
Audi plans to introduce the new system this summer in the 2012 Audi A8 line, the 2012 Audi A6 and the 2012 Audi Q7.
“The Audi Connect service is a great example of how the vehicle ownership experience can be enhanced with wireless connectivity and we’re thrilled to be a part of it,” said John Horn, national director of M2M at T-Mobile USA.
