BTRC makes the move as deadline looms for licence renewal
The telecom regulator will open audits into mobile phone operators next week and has already appointed two firms for the task, said officials yesterday.
Initially, top two operators — Grameenphone and Banglalink — will come under the scanner of the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC).
The move, first of its kind by the regulator, came at a time when these two operators along with Robi and Citycell will have to renew their licences this year.
BTRC officials who confirmed the latest move said the audit firms would look into the financials of all domestic telecom service providers and check if there was any irregularity, especially in sharing revenue of the operators with the government.
On the basis of the audit reports, the regulator will take action against any operator, if found guilty, said the officials.
