Looking to expand its reach beyond traditional wireless voice calls, T-Mobile USA Inc. (DTEGY) unveiled its Bobsled service that will allow users to make free calls using a Voice over Internet Protocol application.
The service is initially being launched as a Facebook application, which will allow Facebook users to make free calls to their “friends” from a personal computer and through the platform’s chat window. Users will also be able to send voice messages to their friends either privately or via their “walls.”
Still confused? Think of making a Skype call using a one-touch application on your Facebook page. T-Mobile USA noted that the free Facebook application, which is powered by Vivox Inc., is available today and is not exclusive to T-Mobile USA customers.
In addition to the Facebook application, T-Mobile USA noted that the Bobsled service also powers the Group Text and Cloud Text applications on the Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. Sidekick 4G device. Those services allow users to create, name, manage and participate in reply-all group text conversations in the case of Group Text, and to text with friends or groups using either their computer or mobile device in the case of Cloud Text.
T-Mobile USA said it plans to bolster the Bobsled offering with video chat functionality, enable users to place calls to mobile and landline domestic numbers and to expand the platform across multiple mobile platforms.
T-Mobile USA also noted that the Bobsled news comes one month after AT&T Inc. announced plans to acquire the carrier for $39 billion, highlighting that while the end may be near for T-Mobile USA, the carrier remains active in rolling out new services to the market.
