AT&T Mobility to begin updating 4G devices to 4G capabilities

AT&T Mobility (T) is set to “4G-enize” a 4G device announcing this afternoon that it was set to begin rolling out an update for the HTC Corp. Inspire smartphone that will allow for higher-speed uploads through the HSUPA standard.
The Inspire launched earlier this year lacking support for the HSUPA standard, thus limiting network upload speeds to UMTS speeds of around 384 kilobits per second. With HSUPA, uplink speeds can reach several megabits per second.
AT&T Mobility has noted that its “4G” HSPA+ offering is dependent on both devices able to support network speeds in excess of 14.4 Mbps as well as cell sites have adequate backhaul capabilities.
AT&T Mobility said it was also working on an update for the Motorola Mobility Holdings Inc. Atrix 4G that would provide for HSUPA support.
For both devices, the download procedure will require a customer access a Wi-Fi network.
