Mothering Sunday used to be a day where moms nationwide could expect flowers, breakfasts in bed and beautifully written, thoughtful cards. But we’ve evolved as a species and pushing forward into the digital future, our mothers can now expect something truly special on the one day a year kids remember to appreciate them: a 140 character or less text message.
Never mind searching for just the right words to express how much your mother means to you, just tap out a thoughtful “Happy mother’s day to the bestest mom in the whole wide universe” and you’re donzo for the whole next year.
Think I’m being cynical? Check out the stats. In 2010 global communication business service firm Syniverse said people sent more text messages on Mother’s Day (1.63 billion) than New Year’s Day, Valentine’s Day and St. Patrick’s Day.
Indeed, you can check out some more interesting stats from Syniverse’s inforgaphic below:
The firm attributed this to “text-savvy teens” – we attribute it to the degradation of literacy and values of the youth today.
This year, the number of “gee, mom, thanks for having me and all that” text messages increased even further, to two billion SMSes, a 23.6% increase year-over-year.
We’re sure mobile moms and digital dads are delighted by their technically enhanced twit teens. After all, who needs flowers and breakfast in bed when you can spend all morning deciphering this:
“:-) mother’s dA mom. hOp U hav a gr8 dA. luv U loads, yor ungra8ful offspring.”
