Dell pockets $476M federal government contract

Dell LogoRound Rock-based Dell Inc. (DELL) was chosen by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to provide computer equipment and hosting services for more than 1,200 VA sites nationwide. Dell landed the four-year, $476 million contract to provide 600,000 personal computers and monitors along with deployment services and computer support for the VA.

The No. 2 computer maker worldwide is also charged under contract to improve access, manageability and security of its end-user computing environment.

Dell released a $2.63 billion profit from $61.4 billion in revenue after the company’s fiscal 2011 report was posted in late January. It was an improvement from 2010’s $1.43 billion profit off $52.9 billion in revenue.

Shares of Dell opened at $15.44 today, down seven cents from its close yesterday. The company employs around 15,000 people in the surrounding Austin area and has recently shown major investment in cloud services and research opportunities in Silicon Valley and worldwide.
