The draw of smartphones is beginning to hit hard in Spain where a recent survey by Nielsen found nearly 40% of the country’s mobile population is sporting an advanced mobile device at the end of the first quarter.
The survey found that Nokia Corp.’s Symbian operating system was the most popular OS in the country with 65% market share, which was a 9% dip from the previous quarter. Apple Inc.’s iOS and Google Inc.’s Android OS were tied for second position with 9% market share each. The report noted that Android had gained 7% over the previous quarter, while iOS was up 3% sequentially.
The results were somewhat similar to a recent Cannacord Genuity report that found Nokia continuing to lose market share in the domestic market to the likes of iOS and Android.
The survey also found that 41% of Spain’s smartphone users and 10% of feature phone users tapped into the Internet from their mobile devices, with 44% of those accessing a social networking or online community site. In addition, the survey noted that 80% of smartphone users and 79% of feature phone users use text messaging from their device; 29% of smartphone users and 6% of feature phones users access e-mail; and 40% of smartphone users and 34% of feature phone users play games on their mobile device.
