Amidst months of rumors, Facebook Inc. decided to hire former Oracle Corp. (ORCL) chief spokesman Joe Lockhart as VP of global communications.
Lockhart is also well known in political circles after serving as Bill Clinton’s former secretary and most recently worked as founding partner and managing director of Glover Park Group, a consultancy firm in Washington, D.C. His stint at Oracle only lasted five months in Silicon Valley, when Lockhart left in 2001 after stating that the commute between Southern California and the nation’s capitol was interfering with his life too much.
Speculation concerning the hiring of Robert Gibbs, former press secretary to President Barack Obama, was found to be erroneous.
Lockhart’s new role begins in mid-July under the tutelage of Elliot Schrage, VP of global communications, marketing and public policy at Facebook. Lockhart will be responsible for corporate policy and international communication efforts for the social networking mogul.
Facebook opened offices in Austin in Oct. 2010, and through an incentives agreement with the City of Austin, has pledged to hire 200 workers during a four-year time line.
