ZTE to produce tablets in Brazil

Chinese manufacturer ZTE Corp. said it will produce tablets in Brazil. The annoucement was given just after a July 27 meeting that ZTE’s CEO, Hou Weigui, had with the president of Brazil, Dilma Rousseff, in Brasília.

During this meeting, Weigui guaranteed that ZTE has done some deals with local manufacturers in order to produce devices locally, according to Agência Brasil. He also said that ZTE has already invested in Brazil US$30 million, part of a US$250 million commitment that had been announced when Rousseff visited ZTE’s research-and-development center in China last April.

The rest of the money will be spent through 2014. Part of it may be used to build an industrial park in Hortolândia (countryside of São Paulo), where the company may employ 2,500 workers.

ZTE also plans to make itself part of the national broadband plan (PNBL).
