Let it not be said that the RCR team is not dare deviling and adventurous, dear readers! This past week our team climbed the world’s fourth largest telecom tower – and the second tallest freestanding tower in the world – in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, to get some good shots of the structure, whose antenna reaches up to a whopping 421 m (1,381 ft).
The observation tower sits at a slightly lower 335 m (1,099 ft), but that’s still a fair distance above solid ground, and thus not an easy shlep for this vertigo challenged writer.
officially named Menara KL, the huge structure was completed in 1995 and is operated by Menara Kuala Lumpur Sdn. Bhd., a wholly owned subsidiary of the Telekom Malaysia Group. It isn’t all about tech though, as the building also acts as the Islamic falak observatory, where Muslims can see the crescent moon which marks the beginning of Ramadhan, Syawal, and Zulhijjah.
To mark its dual purpose, the tower’s insides are as magnificent as its antenna is high, with lobby ceilings made from exquisite cut glass domes, which shimmer under the lamplight.
with its 22 levels, 4 elevators and 2,058 steps, the construction certainly is something to look at. No wonder it was chosen as a first pit-stop in The Amazing Race Asia!
