The Brazilian government approved the request for PIS/Cofins and IPI tax breaks by six tablet manufacturers: MXT, Positivo, Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd., Motorola Inc., Envision and Aiox.
The companies were the first to receive such tax breaks after previous lawsuits were filed looking to distance tablet devices from the same tax category as desktops and notebooks.
The reduction of the federal taxes and state taxes – such as ICMS – should reduce the tablets prices up to 40%. Since the government announced plans for the tax cuts in May 15 companies have expressed interest in producing tablets in Brazil.
