Brazilian carriers sign agreement on fixed, mobile broadband prices

As part of the country’s National Broadband Plan, four Brazilian carriers said that within 90 days they would start providing 1 megabit per second fixed or mobile Internet access for R$ 35 ($22.50) per month. The carriers are Oi, Telefonica, Sercomtel and CTBC.

The schedule of service provision has not been closed, but the government believes that the service should be available throughout the country and about 70% of households by 2014, at which point network speeds are expected to increase to 5 Mbps.

The agreement does not establishe targets for Internet quality, though the national telecommunications agency Anatel could vote in October on regulations to establish rules that must be followed by all companies that offer fixed and mobile Internet services.
