Mexico’s telecommunications sector grew 12.7% in the first quarter

Mexico’s telecommunications sector grew 12.7% in the first quarter of the year, compared with the same period in 2010. During the first three months of 2011, satellite television continued as the most dynamic growth sector, followed by international long-distance traffic and mobile telephony traffic.

Mobile traffic (minutes used on the network) increased 15.1% year over year, which confirmed the recovery experienced in the past six months, after a previous slowdown.

This positive trend of growth in mobile telephony is recorded both in the number of subscribers and in the minutes used in networks. In 1Q, 2.35 million subscribers were added in mobile. Now, Mexico has 93.7 million subscribers, and teledensity in this segment is approximately 83.4 lines per 100 inhabitants.
