Online film-rental service Netflix and Mexican broadcaster Grupo Televisa have agreed to a partnership where Netflix will distribute Televisa soap operas and other programs. The TV broadcaster will provide about 3,000 hours of shows a year.
In a statement, Televisa said this was an important first step plan to monetize its content library, which today includes more than 50,000 hours available for distribution through digital media. The firms haven’t disclosed the terms of the deal.
Netflix has announced it will expand to 43 countries throughout Latin America by the end of this year. Members in the region will be able to access Netflix in Spanish, Portuguese, or English, depending on their preference. Netflix counts around 23 million members in the United States and Canada, and it’s the world’s leading Internet subscription service for enjoying movies and TV shows.
