BlackBerry set to unleash Colt in early 2012

RIM is preparing to unleash its BlackBerry Colt running a QNX operating system but without BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES) in Q1 of 2012.

According to Boy Genius Report, the 1Ghz Single core phone is about ready to bolt the BlackBerry coop, but not without some serious compromises. Apparently the QNX operating system will require some sort of overhaul to RIM’s BES servers and the new phones could launch before these are ready. If that turns out to be the case, customers would have to find a substitute like Microsoft’s ActiveSync for Exchange email instead. RIM is also taking a risk by releasing another single cored smartphone in a quarter expected to be dominated by dual core and possibly even quad core offerings.

The firm appears to be hoping that its QNX software will fill in the gaps with a fluid operating system users find more attractive and useable.

For those unconvinced, there’s always RIM’s BlackBerry 5 series offerings from last week, including the Bold 9900, 9930 and two new Torch models.
