India’s Micromax invests $12.6M to attack Brazilian market

Indian mobile phone manufacturer Micromax said it is investing R$ 20 million (US $12.6 million) to begin selling its devices in Brazil. The expectation, according to Mauro Federici, Micromax’s country manager in Brazil, is to reach 1 million units sold in the first year of operation in the country and be among the tops of the market in 24 months.

In Brazil, the Asian giant will focus on 18- to 35-year-olds, since it’s highlighting features such as dual chips, multimedia and a long battery life. This month, three phone models are for sale in retail channels. CIMEL is handling distribution, initially in the Northeast. Four other models should come to market in coming months as the brand expands nationwide.

Micromax’s portfolio includes more than 50 products, ranging from the most basic handsets to the 3G technology, the Android operatoing system and Wi-Fi routers. With an average launch of three handsets a month, the manufacturer sells more than 1 million units per month.

Micromax devices all contain two chip technologies so two operators in a market can buy the same device even if they use different protocols.
