Microsoft’s Mango prematurely drops

There was juicy news for experimental mobile enthusiasts today, as a version of Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 (WP7) Mango was leaked online by xda-developers.

Released internally at Microsoft to developers for testing purposes, build 7720 soon found its way onto the World Wide Web, where it can now be downloaded for those unafraid of the potential consequences of picking the as-of-yet forbidden fruit.

As with all unripe fruit, version 7720 of Mango may well leave downloaders with a bit of a stomach ache, having not yet been officially approved by Microsoft.

The vanilla version is still very much in development and lacks all those polished tweaks and twists that will likely tip up in the official versions due out this fall.

That being said, if you are the proud owner of a  HTC HD7, HTC Mozart, HTC Trophy, HTC Arrive, LG Optimus 7, Samsung Focus or Dell Venue Pro and want to try it out, it is possible, if risky and time consuming. We’re told it takes over an hour to update the phone and requires a fair amount of tech savvy.

It’s also worth bearing in mind that impatience could cost you dearly, as was the case for early Nodo version updaters, who quickly found they could no longer get any further upgrades to the software once their phones had been jailbroken.

If September 1 seems far too far off for you to have the latest version of hardware accelerated Internet Explorer 9 on your WP7 handset, or better Bing search integration, then by all means have a bite of that sweet fruit. Just don’t point your sticky fingers at us if it all goes pear shaped.
