Bolivian’s Control Authority and Social Control of Telecommunications and Transport (ATT) said it will make a ruling on the fees it will impose on the country’s largest carriers beginning next year. The ATT noted that the largest carrier will be the one with the largest share of gross income as well as control in excess of 40% of the market for a 12-month period.
Currently, Empresa Nacional de Telecomunicaciones (Entel) owns about 40% of the domestic mobile market and is considered to be the main carrier in setting national cellular rates. Telecel (Tigo) is the country’s second largest operator with approximately 35% of the market, while Nuevatel (VIVA) controls about 23% of the market. Bolivia had just over 7 million cellular customers at the end of last year.
ATT noted that the objective of the fee was to benefit users as it’s focused on improving quality of service.
