Brazilian army, Motorola Solutions to test LTE in 700 MHz

The Brazilian army and Motorola Solutions Inc. (MSI) announced that they will test LTE (Long Term Evolution) technology in Brasília, the capital of Brazil. The initiative, which includes Motorola’s investment of US $2 million, aims to present the possibilities and alternatives to improve the security framework in the country through a mobile broadband network that operates in the 700 MHz frequency range.

The network will be installed at two sites in Brasilia next month, covering Esplanada dos Ministérios (Esplanade of Ministries) and Communications Center and the Army Electronic Warfare (CCOMGEX). Motorola said it may be used by other security agencies located in the capital as well.

The network is expected to be in operation for at least six months. Motorola Solutions is in the process of getting authorization from the National Telecommunications Agency (Anatel) to grant a license for experimental use of this frequency range. The tests should involve the transmission of voice and data, and multimedia services and broadband applications.

According to Motorola Solutions, the use of LTE at 700 MHz for public safety has been advocated and applied in several European countries and in the United States. Recently, CEO Motorola Solutions Inc. Gregory Brown visited Brazil and highlighted the importance of using using 700 MHz spectrum to bring mobile broadband to Brazil.

Brown had a meeting with Minister of Communications Paulo Bernardo in which he said the vendor could expand its business in Brazil, where the company has been operating for 35 years.

Brown also said that he believes this spectrum use is a trend that should continue in Brazil, and that he thinks will be a boon for economic development and expansion of the work. Today 700 MHz spectrum is used by the broadcast industry but with the move to digital TV, the space must be vacated by 2016.

Motorola Solutions provides equipment and systems for businesses and governments.
