Colombia counts 4.1 million broadband connections

Broadband in Colombia grew 91.1% between August 2010 and June 2011, according to a report by the Ministry of Information Technologies and Communications. The country jumped from 2.2 million broadband connections to 4.1 million. According to the ministry, this significant advance occurred due to Digital Pan, which aims to reach 8.8 million connections in 2014. Compared to first-quarter 2011, when there were 3.65 million subscribers, broadband penetration increased 11.5%.

In the second quarter of 2011, fixed Internet subscribers made up 61.2% of the broadband base, while 38.8% of subscribers were 3G mobile Internet users. Broadband penetration remains a growing trend, and at the end of the second quarter, it was 8.9%.

The report notes that in June 2011, fixed and mobile Internet subscribers grew by 53.96% compared to second quarter 2010 and 9.24% over the first quarter of 2011. As in the previous quarter, mobile subscribers had a higher growth trend to reach 119.79% over the second quarter of 2010 and 12.82% compared to the first quarter of 2011.

In the second quarter 2011, Colombia counted 2,479,478 subscribers to mobile Internet. It is a variation of 12.82% over the first quarter of 2011 and a 119.79% over the same period previous year. The 3G mobile phone generation has a growing trend in participation in wireless Internet, going from 12.6% in the first quarter of 2011 to 16.9% in the second quarter of that year.
