Tawainese operator to deploy ALU transport solution

Chunghwa Telecom, the largest telecommunications operator in Taiwan, selected Alcatel-Lucent (ALU) to upgrade its network to handle the country’s increased demand for high-bandwidth mobile services. Alcatel-Lucent will provide its Packet Transport Network solution to replace Chunghwa Telecom’s existing transport network, which is based on the SDH standard and was designed primarily to handle voice traffic on the network.
The solution uses ALU’s 1850 Transport Service Switch, which will lay the foundation for Chunghwa’s eventual move to deploy LTE services, even as it supports 2G and 3G technologies.
“Smart phones, tablets and other Internet-connected mobile devices have caused a huge increase in mobile data traffic in Taiwan,” said Ken Wu, president and managing director of Alcatel-Lucent Taiwan. “ We have been working closely with Chunghwa Telecom to build an efficient packet transport network which can match that growing demand efficiently. This is a great opportunity for us to increase our involvement with optical networking in Taiwan, and to demonstrate our ability to support a seamless network transition, without disruption to our customer, or their customers.”
Chunghwa Telecom stated: “Deploying high speed packet access technology for mobile broadband is a key strategic focus for Chunghwa Telecom. This involves a substantial expansion of base stations and WiFi access points to support our mobile data subscribers. Alcatel-Lucent has a deep understanding of our network and, as a leader in optics with unmatched knowledge and experience of network transformation, we are glad to have them as a partner as we work to deliver a new generation of services and experiences to our customers.”
